Prayer To Overcome Evil
Evil is anything that is not consistent with the character of God. It is also called wickedness, unrighteousness, sin and iniquity. In essence, it isn’t associated with the personality of God and cannot please God.
God is righteous, pure, holy, true, just, and perfect. His will is perfect and He has made all things in His power and might.
The Bible says that He is light and there is no shadow of turning or deceit in Him:
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” – James 1:17 ESV
We are called to show that the light of God is in us as we do the things that will please Him and not dishonor Him.
We are not like the children of the world, whose father is Satan. For we know that Satan has no business doing what is right and pleasing to God, but has been a liar from the beginning. Jesus made it known to us in John 8:44 ESV:
“… When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
This is why the Bible continually teaches us to run away from evil and overcome it, because it is the character of the devil, and there is no relationship between light and darkness.
Jesus said in the prayer, teaching us:
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” – Matthew 6:13 ESV
It is the will of God that we do not partake in evil deeds that will not glorify Him, but He also gives us the power to overcome evil and do His good will and pleasure through us:
“for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” – Philippians 2:13 ESV
We may wonder what evil truly is then. The bible does not leave us guessing, but authoritatively states that every work of the flesh is evil, in Galatians 5:19-21.
Take no pleasure and interest in the works of evil, the deeds of sin that do not glorify God. (Ephesians 5:11)
We are called to do good and not evil. When we refuse to forgive those who have hurt us in one way or the other, in God’s dictionary, that is called ‘evil’. God teaches us to love all men, and never repay an evil deed with another evil, because it doesn’t reflect the character of the Living Christ in us if we are found responding in the way that the world would respond.
You are different from the people of the world; you are the light of the world – a difference in the darkness that blinds men – show them the light by showing them the love of God that is not based on the outcome of their behavior or attitude towards you:
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” – Romans 12:9 ESV
We can only overcome evil when we dedicate our lives whole-heartedly to God through prayer and study of the word, along with practicing what we have learnt. The power of God is at work in us through His Spirit, who gives us the victory over evil.
Let us Pray
Oh Lord, I surrender to Your will for my life. I know that You have given me power over every evil, and I walk in the knowledge of Your Word today, overcoming all that is not right in Your sight.
May I love my enemies, and overcome their evil works with Your love. May I, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, be a channel of Your love and good works.
I declare that every chain of evil words spoken against me is now broken. I am the head, never the tail, above only and never beneath. I have wisdom and divine strategies. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
