Prayer to get out of the pit

One day, a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway. It just wasn’t worth the effort to retrieve the donkey.

AD!

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly.

Then, to everyone’s amazement, the donkey quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down into the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

Playing the character

One Friday, in school, I played a character from the television series “The Planet of the Apes.” Everyone loved my portrayal, but I knew it would come with consequences the next week in school. I prayed to the Lord about it and I went to school on Monday with the attitude of the donkey.

For three days the kids tried all types of name-calling and mocking. But instead of resisting, I smiled and even joined them. By the end of the third day, when they realized the name-calling was having no effect on me, they gave up. The more dirt they threw at me, the taller I stood.

Life will throw dirt at you

Life, and even people, from time to time, will throw you into the pit. Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt.

The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest pits just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

And, most importantly, recognize God is always with us in every situation. Even sitting in the bottom of a dark, cold, lonely pit, He will never leave you. He’s been there before, and He knows the way out!

Psalm 40:2 reads:

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire;

he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

Let Us Pray

Heavenly Father, I called on Your name from the lowest pit. Lord, You heard my voice and lifted me. You drew near to me when I cried out to You. And You said, Do not fear!

Lord, your mercy is great and Love is wonderfully amazing. As each challenge comes its way, you walk beside me, directing my steps.

Bless those of us who are struggling to climb out of the pit. May we trust in you and climb over the obstacles and hurdles. Lead us out of the pit of depression, confusion, fear and loneliness.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
