Breaking The Spirit of Desperation: The devil’s weapon of mass destruction

Desperation is uneasiness in your spirit, to want things to happen in your own time, rather than waiting on God’s time. It is an unhealthy desire or hunger for something, that causes people to barely care about the source of what they want, as long as they do get it.

AD!

Desperation causes people to move out of the will of God, because they feel that God is taking too long. They shift their thinking from what God has said and promised, to what they want and desire, because of what the devil has presented to them. They start making decisions without consulting God in prayer.

A good example is Esau, the firstborn of the twins of Isaac. He sold his birthright to his brother Jacob, because he was hungry. In the end, he lost his blessing to his brother, and thus became inferior to his brother all his life. Desperation!

Genesis 25:29-33 And one day, Jacob was cooking some soup, when Esau came in from the fields in great need of food. And Esau said to Jacob, Give me a full meal of that red soup, for I am overcome with need for food: for this reason he was named Edom. And Jacob said, First of all, give me your birthright.  And Esau said, Truly, I am at the point of death: what profit is the birthright to me? And Jacob said, First of all, give me your oath; and he gave him his oath, handing over his birthright to Jacob. [BBE]

Here’s why we should break the spirit of desperation: Desperation removes focus. It removes direction. When you are desperate, the will of God is not in place. You take anything that comes. You lose discernment, and your destiny is compromised.

My pastor friend shared her story with me:

“In my final year at varsity, I failed 3 subjects. I rewrote them, but again I failed one. I was so desperate to graduate. I went to the lecturer to receive the additional marks, and he asked me to sleep with him or give him money. I was on the verge of giving him money, but a small, still voice reminded me of who I am.”

Maybe you have been single for too long, and you feel like you’re getting old for marriage…and now  you want to take anything that can breathe and talk. Maybe you want to marry an unbeliever, because the men in the church are taking long to approach you.

Maybe you are desperate to make money, so that you start considering selling drugs or doing illegal businesses. You feel like joining the cult or selling your soul to the devil.

Maybe you are desperate for good grades or a  promotion, that you start considering sleeping with your lecturer or boss to get what you want.

Today, the word of God reminds us, to wait on the Lord, and to avoid comparisons:

Psalms 37:7 Be patient and wait for the Lord to act; don’t be worried about those who prosper or those who succeed in their evil plans. [GNT]

The Bible also shows us the benefits of waiting on God. We don’t wait on God in vain, but our patience is rewarded. Waiting on God, is you telling God that, “God I know You, You are faithful. I trust You”.

Isaiah 40:30-31 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. [RSV]

Let Us Pray

O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.  You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, you know it.

You make the clouds your chariot, You walk upon the wings of the wind. You clothe yourself with light as with a garment. You are full of royal splendor and majesty. You are the beginner of the beginning, yet You have no beginning. You are the LORD of lords and the KING of kings. You are the first and the last, and so You have the final say in my life.

Dear Lord, sometimes I really feel helpless and out of control. I feel behind, delayed and forgotten. Sometimes, I feel You are taking too long, and I really just want to make my own way. Please forgive me this sin, and help my unbelief.

At times, out of desperation, I am tempted to do things that are not of you. But Oh Lord, I revere you, and I want to walk according to your word. My Father and my God, please help me and teach me to wait on You.

Today your word reminds me that the plans You have for me are good plans, plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plans to give me hope and a future. Lord I may not see the whole staircase, but I will trust your step to step guidance. I will wait upon you patiently in the name of Jesus Christ.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Lord, I break every spirit of desperation in my life, in the name of Jesus Christ. Every spirit frustrating me, I cast out.  Every spirit tempting me to chase after things not of God, I cast you out in the name of Jesus Christ.

Every spirit of impatience making me to rush into relationships where God does not want me to be, I command you to lose your hold over my life now. Every spirit of desperation clouding my judgement, and decision-making, catch fire and be broken in the name of Jesus Christ.

I choose to stay until God answers. I choose to stay until God blesses me. I choose to stay until I receive the promise of God. I refuse to be frustrated. I refuse to walk by sight, in the name of Jesus Christ. I will walk by faith as I wait on God. In Jesus Christ mighty name, AMEN.

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. [NKJV]
